Run Your Car With Water and Save Hundreds on Fuel Each Month

July 2nd, 2009

As high gas prices continue to skyrocket out of control, help still does not seem to be on the horizon. No one appears to be holding these oil companies accountable, and despite the immense public outcry, it does not appear that anyone is coming to save us from these astronomical gas costs. When it costs 2 to 3 thousands of dollars extra per year just to get to work and school, you know you are paying far too much.

However, there are actually ways to reduce this cost and get more gas mileage from your car. Oil companies have managed to mute this type of technology for a long time, keeping it out of the news and local newspapers. But an underground storm is brewing, and that storm has alternative fuel sources that cannot only help you save money, but improve the environment.

In fact, you can go on YouTube right now and find clips of news stories that have featured some very fascinating, simple, inexpensive fuel technologies. The hottest one sweeping the globe right now is the Run your Car on Water (HHO) phenomenon.

There is, however, a way to use hydrogen gas that allows you turn your car into a hydrogen and gasoline hybrid, tripling your gas mileage and allowing you to save thousands of dollars each year at the pump. It’s called HHO gas, and it is created using straight H2O that you can get from tap water.

Although ideally we here in America will switch towards completely fuel free systems of travel, such as biking or running, it will obviously be quite a long time before anything like that is implemented. Until then, one way to get relief is to turn your car into a water car hybrid. The end result of the Hydrogen gas is water, so when you have used the fuel, far less harm is being done to the environment.

High gas prices appear to be a mainstay in today’s economy. Too many people are profiting off of the working class for any real change to take place, and big oil is going to continue its stranglehold on fuel and energy systems for as long as this continues. It may be decades before any real change is implemented, and even then it may come too late.

But since water fuel technology is real and available today, you can still make a difference to the environment and your wallet. And the more people that start using Water fuel technology, the more likely others will put time and money into researching a way to someday use a car that is 100% run on water, with absolutely no gas necessary. While it may seem like a pipe dream, when the demand for water engines goes up, the market will eventually (however reluctantly) start to follow.

While television may still try to convince you that the only way to run your car is with high cost gasoline, HHO Gas is a readily available way to reduce your overall costs, improve your gas mileage considerably, and make a difference in the environment. The systems cost as little as 50 dollars to build, you can build it from home in less than a few hours, and you can start saving the environment and your budget right away.

Everyday Uses For Aromatherapy

July 2nd, 2009

Are you are an aromatherapy fan who loves to buy candles, sachets, and essential oils? You may find it hard to resist rest and relaxing inducing formulas. It is time to expand your aromatherapy horizons. There is much more to aromatherapy than you may have imagined. There is a plethora of vibrant, life enhancing vital experiences awaiting your discovery. You can make aromatherapy a constant part of your day.

One way to expand the use of aromatherapy is to spray a few pages of your planner with your favorite essential oils. Be sure to dilute the oils so they will not ruin the paper in your planner. Every time you open your planner to note another challenging assignment, you will trigger the release of a surge of refreshing, vitalizing fragrance. It will give you inspiration and strengthen your resolve. You can also add essential oils to notepads and even memos.

For many women, it is a part of their daily routine to include a spray of their favorite fragrance on their wrists or behind their ears. You can also spritz the fragrance behind your knees and your favorite aroma will be released during those high pressure times when your body temperature begins to heat up. You can also comb a light spray of your favorite fragrance through your hair. It will make you feel empowered and emboldened even when you have to make your most challenging presentations.

You can incorporate aromatherapy into your laundry routine by adding lemon and chamomile to the final rinse. You can also make your own dryer sheets infusing them with your favorite scent. Use an old sock or scrap of cloth and place a few drops of oil on it before you toss it in the dryer. Lemon and chamomile will keep your laundry smelling fresh, while lavender and chamomile will make your pillows and bed linens fragrant with relaxing aroma.

Diffusers are an excellent way to disseminate fragrant oils, especially in the bathroom and bedroom. Diffusers come in a variety of styles and colors and can be used with the fragrance of your choice. There are even aromatherapy fountains available. Many are small enough to sit on your nightstand or desk allowing you to enjoy the fragrant scent all day long.

Aromatherapy also allows you to give up your gnarly old gym towel and wet wipes. Create your own wipes using essential oils. When you extract or distill your own natural oils, save the hydrosols. Soak a few inexpensive terrycloth “bar towels” in your hydrosols; then, you can freeze them for use at a later time.

As you can see the possibilities and uses of aromatherapy are completely endless. It is fun to experiment and keep trying new aromatherapy uses.

Make Pure Aromatherapy Mists At Home

July 2nd, 2009

When people first encounter aromatherapy, they often find themselves wondering how to use the oils they adore so much. It’s one thing to smell rose absolute from the container, but we don’t buy essential oils to let them sit in their beautiful cobalt bottles. We want to use them! And as anyone who has fallen in love with an essential oil knows, we want them around us all of the time. One way to achieve this is to venture into making your own aromatherapy sprays. It’s easy, inexpensive and can be a way for the whole family to enjoy the therapeutic effects of essential oils.

How many times have you encountered a commercial room spray that made your head spin? Often, the fragrances used in these products are synthetic and leave us feeling overwhelmed rather than refreshed. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are all plant-derived, and if we find oils we like, our experience of a room spray changes dramatically. Instead of simply acting as a mask for unpleasant odors, an aromatherapy spray changes the atmosphere of a room, providing us with immediate physical and psychological benefits.

Aromatherapy sprays are a combination of pure essential oil and water, and in some instances, witch hazel. For supplies all you’ll need are spray bottles, spring water and essential oils. Because essential oils don’t like to be exposed to too much light, it’s best to pick cobalt blue, amber or some other dark-colored glass bottle for storage. When filling with water, try to use purified water to reduce the possibility of chemical contaminants, which might taint the scent of your spray or diminish the medicinal qualities of the oils. Finally, if you intend to keep your sprays for longer than two months, consider putting a small amount of witch hazel in the mix. Witch hazel is an extract from the North American shrub Hamamelis virginiana, and it is an excellent natural preservative when used with essential oils. Finally, you’re on to the fun part - the essential oils!

With so many aromatic oils to choose from, you can create an endless variety of sprays for your home, office or car. When considering which oils to buy, always seek the highest quality you can find. You will need to use less oil, and the healing benefits of the oil will increase exponentially if you choose a superior oil. Therapeutic-grade oils satisfy our senses in ways inferior oils simply cannot. Excellent oils make the mind feel bright and provide instantaneous changes in the body. This is because the body/mind connection is immediately felt with aromatic oils. That’s why we want to make the most of the oils we have and choose the best we can afford.

Any essential oil can be turned into a spray, but some are even better than others. The citrus oils, like mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, lime and tangerine, make great misters. Citrus oils give your environment an instant facelift, turning a tired room into a bright sanctuary. These pleasing oils can be mixed with sharp-smelling oils like eucalyptus, rosemary verbenone, myrtle or peppermint for a balanced blend. Just remember, citrus oils can cause skin reactions if they are exposed to sun, so keep these blends indoors.

Another popular group of oils for room sprays is the coniferous plants and trees. Juniper berry, balsam fir, spruce, black spruce, cedar and sandalwood are excellent choices for infusing a space with grounding aromas. These essential oils are simultaneously calming and uplifting, and they are especially pleasant during the winter months, when access to the outdoors is limited. Unlike fruit and flower scents, pines and woods imbue our environments with a subtle scent that, like incense, warms the space without overpowering our senses.

Next, blending. First, fill your bottle most of the way with water. If witch hazel is needed, blend it in a 4 to 1 ratio. For one ounce of liquid, put in 4 to 16 drops of oil. Since the water and oil won’t naturally blend, you must shake the mixture whenever you use it. All essential oils can be made into misters, yet some oils are denser that others (like vetiver) and need to be shaken vigorously prior to spraying.

When blending your own scents, start with a few drops and increase in number to make sure you like the mix. Just remember that strong oils, like peppermint, black pepper or cinnamon, are more intense once atomized. Only use a few drops of oil, and you should run no risk of irritating your nose, eyes or throat. Also, it’s usually a good idea to avoid essential oils that have been mixed with carrier oils. These mixtures may clog your spray bottle, as carrier oils do not evaporate the way volatile oils do.

Blending aromatherapy room sprays is an easy, enjoyable way to introduce children to the benefits of plant medicine as well. There are, however, a few guidelines to remember when creating sprays for children. For example, always go for less oil in a spray intended for children than you would for an adult. Soft oils like sandalwood, lavender, rose and Roman chamomile are nice for children, as are rosalina, lemon tea tree and vanilla. In fact, vanilla is one of the most calming oils in aromatherapy. If a peaceful night’s sleep is what your child needs (or what you need, for that matter!) 2 drops of Roman chamomile and 2 drops of lavender in one ounce of carrier water will help. Just spray this in the child’s room. Only remember, essential oils should NEVER be misted in a child’s face.

Don’t forget that these sprays can also be adapted for use as natural perfume or deodorant. Simply choose oils that are non-irritating to the skin and mix in the same way you would a room spray. A few beautiful oils to consider: jasmine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver or neroli all make wonderful personal sprays. Just avoid spraying near the eyes or face. Also, any oil you’re using for healing purposes can be diluted in a water/witch hazel mixture and applied as needed throughout the day. If you want your scents on the go, pocket- and purse-size misters are a great way to freshen up, calm down or revive in the middle of the day.

Essential oils are extremely versatile. Once you find a group of oils you love, don’t be afraid to try your hand at making your own blends or creating your own unique applications. After all, nature is a banquet of scents! Room and body sprays are an easy way to make your oils last a long time, and they can be created with any combination of oils you can imagine. The investment is low, they take virtually minutes to concoct, and you can use a different spray in every room of the house. For those of us who cannot imagine life without aromatherapy, sprays ensure we always have a mist of our beloved healing scents close by. Spray and enjoy!

Stress Management Tip: Periodic Massage Chair Therapy

July 2nd, 2009

It seems that in these modern times that stress is just part of the landscape. We seem to be under more pressure whether at home or a work. The major shift of stress seems to be from physical stress to mental stress. Our fore fathers were in much more under stress from physical dangers. We on the other hand, seem to be under much more mental stress. We react to both mental or physical stress in much the same way: the fight or flight reaction. Our source of stress has certainly changed, but not our reaction to it.

What happens when we come under stress? Our body’s natural reactions take over. Our breathing is increased as well as our heart rate. The major organs shut down all but the most vital functions to support hands and feet. Adrenaline is released to get the body primed for taking action. We feel a nervousness and tension as we are facing the unknown. All this chemical reaction is occurring with the build up of a physical action about to take place. However, when the stress is mental there is no physical release.

Stress management is learning how to cope with stress, redirect its energy and release it from the body. We may not be able to eliminate stress from our lives, but we can have strategies to deal with it positively. If you could take the heightened affects of being under stress and put it to positive pursuits, then we are working stress management. The toughest element of stress management is to release it physically.

When we are under stress, our bodies are primed for taking physical action. When we take physical action, then we are releasing out the increased energy out our bodies physically. If we do not have a physical outlet, one excellent method is massage therapy. Massage therapy helps loosen up muscle tension, it releases toxins trapped in our muscle tissue and it helps us to mentally relax. Some massage treatments also can reverse the tension in the major organs via the trigger points in our hands and feet.

A very convenient alternative to going to a massage therapist is a massage chair recliner. These advanced massage recliners have massage therapies ranging from deep tissue, Shiatsu, sports massage, Swedish and many others. There are various benefits to each massage type and each may focus on particular benefits. They will all help relieve discomfort and tension. They all help your mind to relax. These treatments enhance the flow of the lymph system and the blood. Both of these systems filter out chemicals that build up in the body.

Massage cannot eliminate the causes of stress. Stress comes in many forms and individuals all respond differently to them. However, massage therapy can be an essential tool in stress management. Especially massage chairs which offer unprecedented convenience and availability. These massage chairs offer full body massage capability. They can massage from head to toe. Many advanced massage chairs have stretching capabilities to elongate and relax the lower body. They also may have built in music players which help take your mind off the mental stresses impacting you.

Imagine the convenience of having your own massage chair recliner at home. You start to come under stress situations. You can just sit down and let the massage chair work you over. Your body starts to feel better and your mind starts to clear. You now are in a better frame of mind to come up with better ways to overcome the problems at hand. You now have a powerful stress management tool, your massage chair recliner at your disposal.

Can You See A Chiropractor And A Massage Therapist?

July 2nd, 2009

Chiropractic and massage therapy work very well together. So much so, that it’s not uncommon for chiropractic doctors to employ or lease space to massage therapists in their very own office.

Some people have visited a massage therapist for stress relief or to deal with a chronic neck or back pain problem. When they didn’t quite get the lasting relief they were looking for, they went to see a chiropractor.

While the chiropractor can work wonders on moving the spine and returning it’s normal function, some patients end up missing their regular massages. They begin to think that they are “cheating” on their chiropractor and get nervous about whether or not they should even mention their visits.

Your chiropractor will usually be very happy you are seeing a massage therapist (depending on your condition). While the chiropractor adjusts the spine to affect the nerves and the surrounding soft tissues (including the muscles), they may not be able to spend the half hour or an hour that you may need to really get our muscles relaxed.

Having a professional massage your and relax any muscle tightness and spasm will help the chiropractor’s ability to give you a more relaxed, pain-free spinal adjustment. The more tense the muscles are when the doctor administers the adjustment, the less comfortable it can be.

From a long term stand point, the Doctor of Chiropractic is also happy to have the improved blood flow and relaxed muscles too. While the doctor moves the bones, it’s ultimately the muscles that will end up maintaining the bones in their proper place.

If you typically spend all day sitting at the computer and your muscles tend to get very tense (like most of us), it makes sense that you’ll benefit from regular massages. Your chiropractor will not object to this in most cases. Where some people experience problems is when they have a herniated disc, or other condition that involves a lot of inflammation.

When your muscles are very inflamed, a deep tissue massage may tend to increase the inflammation, making things temporarily more painful. When the muscles are more painful, they are more difficult to work with and can keep the chiropractor from being able to work on your spine to the degree that they would prefer.

Talk over any treatments that you are considering or currently doing with any health care provider. Many are okay, and don’t think you’re “cheating” on anyone.

Make the Most of Your Massage

July 1st, 2009

Massage is much more than just a luxury item. The popularity of these types of treatments has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. People are feeling more stress and are looking for holistic ways to reduce it. Massage therapy is a natural method to help us relieve aches, pains and other discomfort in the body. Getting the most out of your treatment involves a few simple tips so that you can maximize your relaxation, recuperation and physical well being.

People are seeking more natural and holistic treatments to their common ailments. Massage therapy has been given throughout time to relieve stress, and reduce muscle stiffness. There is a great variety of massage schools which have sprung up around the world. Many of these massage techniques are now widely available. Regardless of which massage technique you receive, there are some simple to follow guidelines on maximizing your therapy results.

Try to avoid eating before you receive a massage treatment the general rule is eat at least 30 minutes before receiving such a treatment. This is important so that your body is free to start the recuperation and healing process. Otherwise, energy must be diverted to digest and process the food that you just ate. This causes the body to have to process other things rather than concentrate on healing.

You want to avoid any areas that should not receive massage treatments. If you are unsure about receiving a massage treatment, then check with your health advisor. They can let you know is it would be wise to receive a massage in that area. When first receiving a massage, it is typical to feel some discomfort as these areas may be sensitive to start.

Find some relaxing music to play during the session. It is important that you find ways to distract your mind. If you are under stress, then music is a great way to let your mind drift. Your mind needs to let go of the tension is holding over your body. Helping to reduce this source of tension will make your body more receptive areas.

Check that you are breathing normal during the therapy session. Sometimes when a stiff muscle is being worked on, the rate of breathing can increase to deal with the discomfort. Monitor your breathing to see if this is occurring. You want to be relaxed and your breathing should be close to normal.

Turn off your cell phone. While you are getting a massage, make sure that the real world does not intrude. Disconnect all sources of interruption so that you can just relax. Just a few minutes of relaxation can help your body recuperate substantially.

Create a mood of relaxation and comfort and the room in which you are receiving the massage. A candle can work wonders to help in the relaxation process. You can also dim the lights so that you are in a low light level.

Use one of your favorite fragrances in the room. Aromatherapy is quite common to help induce a state of relaxation. With repeated use, the fragrance can help jumpstart your mind into a state of relaxing.

After you receive a massage, you should drink a glass of water. Many massage techniques help to flush the toxins out of the stiff muscle and soft tissue areas. The toxins hold up under times of stress and need to be released. These are much more effectively release from the body when water is consumed within 15 minutes of the massage.

These are just a few tips to help you get the most out of a massage. It is important that the environment and your mental state are congruent with relaxing massage therapy. If you are too distracted, then your body and muscles will not relax. Also, to get the real benefits of massage it must be received on a frequent basis. Just like diet and exercise, it must be done more than time.

How The Three Things You Do More Than Any Other Have Created Your Posture, And How Massage Therapy Can Recreate It

July 1st, 2009

Being a Massage Therapist in a very busy city like Calgary for the past 11 years, I have spent many hours deep into the tissues of thousands of clients. Over 15 000 sessions have led to many realizations and understandings about how the body carries tension, how it becomes posturally distorted, and what tends to keep the musculoskeletal system from finding a state of balance that allows for movement free of pain and restriction.

There are many factors that lead to pain and discomfort. One obvious cause, and one that everyone attempts to manage, is stress. We all have it. We find ways to adapt, deal with or just plain avoid stress! Whether it is psychological or physical, stress finds its way into our lives from many sources. I mention stress because it affects everything else. Every contributor to postural imbalance is only made worse by stress.

The greatest factor affecting peoples predominant posture, which impacts how we move, feel, and cope with everything, is completely tied to habitual postures. Sounds vague? Let me narrow it down to the three habitual patterns which affect your postural reality the most.

Everything you do each day is done sitting, standing, or sleeping!

Your unique way of doing each of these things, has the greatest impact on what your postural reality is. The accidents, sports injuries, broken limbs, nor your genetics are nearly as impactful as the three things you spend the most time doing. Is there an hour in the day that you are not doing one of those three things? How do you sit throughout the day? How do you stand? What body position is held most throughout the sleeping hours each night?

Many of my massage therapy clients have office jobs that require them to maintain a seated position anywhere from 4-8 hours every day! This may not appear to be significant, but lets look a little closer. Lets take the lesser of the two and do some basic math: 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week, and 80 hours a month, equals over 900 hours a year holding a seated position. Of course, that’s only at work! There is the time spent seated in the car, on the couch, at the kitchen table, or at the coffee shop. Obviously we could double that 900 hours a year and still not account for all the time spent in this posturally challenging position!

The Psoas and Rectus Femoris muscles are our primary hip flexors. They are held in a significantly shortened position while we sit for long periods. The major one is the Psoas, which attaches on the anterolateral aspect of our lumbar spine. It follows downward to attach to our thigh bone, the femur. Holding a seated posture for many hours a day trains this muscle to be a shorter muscle. The problems of low back pain and discomfort begin when we try to stand after long periods of sitting. The Psoas’ attempts to maintain the shortened length cause it to pull the lumbar spine forward toward the femur. The low back tends to tighten or even spasm to prevent this forward pull. Over long periods of time the result is chronic back pain.

Having your knees bent at 90 degrees, for countless yearly hours of sitting, also tends to lead to incredibly tight hamstrings! No wonder as we age it gets to harder to touch our toes! Sitting is also hardly kind to our neck and shoulders.

Massage therapy is often used to address the muscular imbalances developed from having your hands on a mouse or keyboard. Your head progressively leans forward to get a closer look at your monitor throughout the day. Throw in a few variables such as the tendency to lean on one butt cheek more than the other, not using a head set, and always mousing with the same hand, and it becomes clear the very act of sitting creates many of the postural distortions which massage therapy address every day.

The second most habitual posture we have and maintain is our standing posture. We don’t think too much of it but each of us, has a stance that is uniquely our own. When we bring conscious awareness to our body while standing, we can begin to see and feel how certain muscles are contributing to one our most dominantly held postures.

Simply glancing down at your feet periodically, without adjusting yourself to some ideal pose, reveals what is likely a reoccurring theme. Are your feet consistently in a similar position every time you look down? Is one always out in front? Is one always rotated in the same direction? These consistencies reveal muscular holding patterns that are having their way with your skeletal structure. You may notice the bodies desire to shift weight more to one side. This too relates to certain muscle being held in more contracted states, than their opposites. Massage therapy looks to reveal the imbalances within our muscle groups and restore it.

Every muscle in the body has an exact opposite muscle which performs an opposite function. One may flex, while the other extends. Muscles balanced in length, strength, and flexibility with their opposites, work together to provide fluid, pain free, dynamic movement, and function.

Massage Therapists’ assist in revealing our habitual patterns that contribute to the postural distortions. By introducing opposition to our habitual postures, we can begin to bring awareness to the balance that lies between the two. Here, freedom from our discomfort and postural strain awaits us. Unfortunately, sleep is not an escape from postural strain.

Sleep is a very habitual act as well. Do you tend to sleep on the same side of the bed every night? Would you or your partner be keen to switch side of the bed? Likely not. Why? Because we are habitual beings. We do things quite habitually, and we move in habitual ways. Even our sleep is done in a very habitual way. Some people sleep on their tummy side every night. Their habit, has them rotating their neck to one side more than the other while being laterally bent to rest on a pillow, for many hours a night.

Side sleepers have their own unique way too. Most sleep predominately on one side. One shoulder gets compressed against the mattress. The legs are rarely held in the exact same position. One may be straight, while the other is flexed at both the hip and the knee. Again these are habitual postures that are held for many hours a night. How do you think your long held sleeping postures, are affecting you standing posture? Your standing posture has been greatly influenced by the sleeping posture you maintained for 6-8 hours last night! Our body want to move into positions that it spends the most amount of time in. Our own sense of what normal standing posture should be, fights against it. Our muscular systems are unconsciously trained to meet the demands of our most dominantly held postures. These are usually in conflict with our perception of what is considered “good posture”.

Massage therapy focuses intently on those muscles holding you in out-of-balance postures. Once these muscles are released of tension, your body enjoys the experience of a more fluid and pain-free range of motion. If you can move daily into positions and ranges which oppose your habitual patterns, you are encouraging a state of balance. With a little help from your massage therapist, you will discover more about your body and how your habitual postures become your unconscious postures. Through the massage therapy process you will encounter new postures thereby helping to bring conscious awareness and balance to your body.
