Nervous about having your first massage? I bet you are. Not to worry, the majority of people are nervous about new experiences if they don’t know much about it. You may have researched massage and found the answer to all your questions but just in case you didn’t I will try to answer them in this article. Things like, do I have to take all my clothes off, will it hurt or do I have to talk all of the time. A good massage is a wonderful experience and one to be repeated many times, so don’t let unanswered questions put you off.
The massage therapist is likely to ask you about your health; what problems you are looking to treat as well as any conditions that may make certain techniques unsuitable or even unsafe. Along with health related questions you will also be asked about your preference for comfort. The massage should not make you feel over exposed or uncomfortable. Your massage therapist may also ask you about your preference for scented oils or other options.
Once your medical history has been taken the massage therapist will explain the plan of action they will be taking, remember each person is an individual so every one’s massage is slightly different. If you are very sensitive you need to inform you therapist. Some people do not like their feet touched, another may not like anyone touching their knees, the massage therapist needs to know these things so that they can alter the massage to suit you. Although a massage should not be painful you may find that any sore areas may be uncomfortable when massaged.
Exposing the area of your body that is being treated will help the therapist to work more efficiently, however, it is not mandatory to undress. While it is preferable to drape the areas not requiring exposure with a sheet or towels it is possible for the therapist to work on you while you are fully dressed although this is not ideal. If you do not feel comfortable without clothing be sure to opt for clothing that is not tight or restrictive as it will interfere with the treatment.
The massage therapist should leave the room while you undress, or else there should be a screen for you to undress behind. A large bath towel should be provided so that you should not feel embarrassed being undressed. Your warmth and privacy are of paramount importance.
The masseur will have a special massage table, and if you need any special bolsters to make you more comfortable these will be provided. When you have a massage you will need to move to various positions so that the therapist can reach all areas that need to be massaged. I cannot state enough if at any time you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable do let your therapist know, as bolsters can be moved to make you more comfortable and more towels provided to cover you up.
Depending on where the massage is being performed and the amount of time available the therapist may dim the lights, play soft music and even light candles.
When massaging the skin oil needs to be used to reduce friction, if your therapist is using essential oils then you need to discuss this with them. Ask which oils are going to used then you can let them know if you are allergic to any of them. The oils that are used should not stain your clothing and after the massage you should be left for for ten minutes or so covered with a warm towel, this should soak up any residue of oil left on your skin
If you prefer not to talk during your massage you should mention that to the therapist. They will still need to ask you to shift from time to time or ask if the procedure is comfortable but you do not have to converse if you prefer not to.
A good massage therapist should make you feel comfortable enough to ask any questions you have about the procedure and respect your privacy and level of comfort while treating you. Ask for recommendations and meet with the therapist to discuss their methods before booking your appointment.
