Massage Chair Massage Functions

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Massage chairs are built to perform a wide variety of massage techniques. More expensive chairs will offer a greater range of massage techniques as well as speeds and intensities whereas basic massage chairs will offer fewer options in terms of massage functions. Still, kneading, rolling, and percussion or tapping are some basic functions that are most important and come standard with most chairs.

The rolling technique is a basic way to stretch your back and spine. This loosens up the area for deeper massages to follow. This massage is performed by a large roller in the back rest of the massage chair and works a large area of the back to increase circulation.

Kneading massages feels like two thumbs rubbing both sides of the spine in a circular motion. It lifts and stretches the muscles along the spine and works deeper into the tissue than the rolling massage. The purpose of the kneading massage is to relax the muscles and invigorate the body by transferring tension from acupoints to a broader area. It works in sequence with the roller.

Percussions, otherwise known as tapping, feels like the edge of hands tapping your back muscles in a very fast and rhythmic motion. This is popular in sports medicine as it relieves spinal joints of pressure and works the entire back.

The Shiatsu massage technique feels like fingers applying pressure directly on specific points of the body. This is a deep tissue technique focused on special acupoints that directly correlate to the different organs or glands in the body. The massage function stimulates specific points to reduce stress, increase the energy flow, and to promote overall health throughout the body.

Acupressure is massage of the back that squeezes and releases the muscles along the spine. The technique is designed to soften up and loosen the muscles for deeper massages by pressing the muscles together inward toward the spine and feels like someone using the heel of their hands.

The Swedish technique is a very relaxing technique of pressuring muscles and rubbing them in the direction of blood flow to the heart. It is a combination of other techniques to produce the loosening and relaxing other muscles as well as increasing blood flood. It is what most people would consider a normal massage and has become the standard massage.

One function that massage chairs offer that can’t be duplicated by any human massage therapist is the air massage. This is a feature of some high end chairs that use the inflating and deflating of air bags to squeeze parts of the back, arms, and legs of the user.

Each technique offered by the massage chair serves its own specific purpose and it is up to the consumer to decide what functions are most important. There is a huge selection of brands and models to choose from and pretty much any combination of functions are available.

Buying A Massage Chair For Comfort

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

A massage chair is a big purchase for most people. This means is that we want to be prepared to make the best decision possible when we hit the show room. If there is nothing else that matters, we are buying a massage chair for two reasons. One is for the massage functions, since it is called a massage chair, and second we differentiate the chairs by the level of comfort.

Massage chairs have built in rollers, nodes, and air bags that try to emulate the hands and fingers of a massage therapist. When you are at the store trying the chairs out, notice the different massage functions as well as the intensity of the massage.

More expensive chairs will offer a wider range of adjustable intensities and speeds but all chairs should offer at least some adjustments. One way most basic chairs will allow you to adjust intensities is by adding or removing the cushions.

Inanimate comfort of the massage chair is really about supporting and filling the contours of your body. It comes down to size, and density of the chair. Removable cushions give users flexibility when it comes to density. You can add more cushions if you prefer to lounge on something soft or, if you need more support, remove cushions if you want your chair to be more firm with less support in specific areas of the body.

How comfortable the massage feels depends on how well the rollers and nodes fit to the body of the user. Rollers in the backrest start at the top and roll downward. For some people of smaller stature, the starting point in the backrest could be too high and start at the persons head so adjustments need to be made to the settings to start the roller at a lower level. Some high end chairs are able to recognize the size of the person in the chair and automatically make adjustments to the massage.

Other chairs will let you choose the sequence of massages and save settings that you like best to be performed the next time you hop on. Some chairs work areas other than the back like the arms, hips, legs and feet using air bags that inflate and deflate.

In many cases, the buyer intends to share the chair with his family or some member of the household who will also use the chair on a regular basis. In such a case, it is better to pay a little extra for the added flexibility of adjustments so everyone who uses the chair can pick the settings they find most comfortable.

Since it a big chair, and you can find one that is of extreme comfort to you it makes sense that many people use the chair to double up as lounge chairs when not in use. It is great to relax in and something to look forward to at the end of the day.

Main Considerations In Massage Chairs

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Looking to buy a massage chair requires more than visiting a shop and sitting in a bunch of different chairs. To make to most of your trip, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the key components to look for in a new massage chair. Knowing your needs as well as restrictions, such as budget, is also a good idea.

The main considerations are massage functions, the material the upholstery is made of, and the asthetics of the massage chair. There are also some less obvious features that you can not notice during the trial visit to the shop so it is good to know some key specifications to look for when reading descriptions of the different chairs.

Most chairs come with rolling, kneading, tapping and percussions. These are the most important massage functions built into every massage chair of every price range. More expensive chairs offer an extension to these functions as well as the option to combine functions to be performed at the same time or in specific sequences.

There are also variations in speed and intensity that add to the combination functionality in more expensive chairs. Higher end chairs will offer a wider range of speeds and intensity while some of the more basic budget models will offer a very small range or just a single speed or intensity.

Massage chairs come upholstered a variety of materials. Leathermatch and premium leather upholstered chairs will come with higher prices while more basic materials like fabric and microfiber won’t carry quite the same premium. Some manufacturers will distinguish their models of chairs based on the upholstery or small accents within the physical design, such as partial wooden bases.

The physical design can be a deal breaker for some people looking for a chair that fits the dcor of their home or office. This can be something as simple as the color selection of the chairs or the contours and shape of the chair. If the aesthetics just aren’t right, some chairs have a pair of wheels so it can be tilted and rolled to a storage place and out of sight.

But there is an even more important factor in play with physical design and that is the comfort the chair provides. A chair with puffy looking cushions can deceive you into thinking it is more comfortable to lounge in than it really might be. Some chairs are designed with removable layers of padding so you can adjust it to the right level of comfort.

In the end, the most important factor in buying a chair is finding the most comfortable massage chair. After all the differences, remember that what you’re looking for is something to relax in. Make it something you look forward to at the end of the day.

Chiropractic Therapy and Massage Chairs

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Many consider chiropractic treatments as an alternative health care methodology. However, chiropractic treatment is a main stream health care method focused on skeletal system discomfort. Chiropractic medicine is more famous for is focus on the health of the spinal column. They use a range of treatments to deal with the muscles, nervous system, skeletal system and other soft tissues of the body. Massage therapy is used for patients soft tissue treatments to help improve range of motion, reduce discomfort and increase muscle flexibility. Massage chairs are being employed to automate many of these treatments.

With the increase in holistic, natural treatments, chiropractic medicine has become more popular. Typically, a visit to a chiropractor was to relieve back pain or headaches. These are still the majority of visits to chiropractic offices. The doctor must still figure out the actual causes of these symptoms in order to provide relief.

Holistic health is the view that a doctor of chiropractic medicine takes for treating patients. They are taught to believe that the body can maintain self-healing if the patient provides the right situation for their body. The doctor is merely there to help induce the body back toward self-healing.

As such chiropractors need to apply specific treatments to induce the bodys self healing process. Some of the treatments include adjustments, electro-stimulation, and massage therapy. Massage chairs are being used to apply massage therapy and other complementary treatments as well.

To get the body back on its course to natural healing, massage treatments need to be performed on a recurring, periodic basis. Through the repetition of these treatments the body begins to heal. The bodys natural healing process will begin to gain momentum.

Massage chairs have become more common in the chiropractic environment. These chairs automate the manual method of massage therapy and provide a means for consistent application of massage therapy. They are both reliable and consistently perform repetitive massage therapy treatments.

There are numerous massage treatments that can be performed with todays advanced massage chairs. You can use them for a general body warm up or warm down. They can apply a specific technique to a given area of focus. The consistency of the massage and the duration can be controlled as required.

Massage chairs come equipped with automatic programs and with manual programs. The automatic programs are usually one touch and run the whole massage chair. Manual programs are used to apply specific massage techniques.

One nice feature of massage chairs is the application of massage therapy to a given region of the body and also for a given duration of time. This provides consistency of massage therapy to patients by eliminating the inconsistencies of massage applied by massage therapists. The intensity of the massage can also be controlled as well, giving the doctor an excellent means to control the periodic application of massage.

Many technologies have been added to massage chairs to complement the massage therapy. The addition of heating elements, tractions systems and even music players continue to increase the capabilities of massage chairs. Patients can be warmed up with the heaters built into the chair. Stretching of the lower body or upper body can be performed in these massage chairs. All the while, the patient can relax to music played on the massage chairs music player.

The advances of massage chairs allow multiple therapies to be applied at the same time if needed. Heat can be applied to the whole back, while the traction function stretches out the lower body. The lower lumbar can be massaged while heat is applied to the legs. The combination of options is truly phenomenal.

A chiropractors role is to align everything to its prior state of functioning. As your body is able to take back over the healing functions, a chiropractor needs to apply repetitive treatments. Massage chairs provide a consistent and dependable means to provide a range of treatments to assist the patients spine back to full health.

Review of the Sanyo HEC-SR1000K Massage Chair Recliner

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Sanyo has a full range of massage chairs in their product line. We are going to take an in depth view of the entry level model for Sanyo. The model SR 1000K is the subject of this product review. Our reviews are systematic and we judge any massage chair is five critical areas. We give a point rating of up to twenty points per area for a total possible score of 100. This is the SR-1000K massage chair recliner by Sanyo.

Warranty Coverage & Customer Service: We start with the warranty coverage because this is your long term protection. Massage chairs are complex machines and obtaining sufficient warranty coverage is always advised. Sanyo covers the SR-1000K recliner with the following warranty: You get 3 years coverage for the roller mechanism, 1 year labor coverage, 1 year parts coverage and 1 year in home service coverage. This is a great warranty for an entry level massage chair. Sanyo also has moved to a national call center which has also improved customer service. We rate the warranty coverage and customer service a 19.

Comfort & Ergonomics: Quite simply, a massage chair needs to be comfortable to sit in. We have seen some chairs that could not be used other than when the massage is running. Sanyo has figured this out and the SR1000 is a comfortable chair. The controller is well laid out and easy to figure out. The main power is to the side which takes a short training period to remember. The foot massager takes getting use to flipping out which is somewhat cumbersome. We give this chair a 17 for comfort and ergonomics.

Ease of Use: This is perhaps a category because it is a pet peeve of ours. Let’s face it our world is getting more complex and so are the devices in it. It is the responsibility of the maker of these items to keep it simple. We found the remote to have too many steps to get what you want compared to other massage chairs. This was surprising given that it was a Sanyo. But nevertheless, it is what it is. We rate the SR-1000 a 16 for ease of use.

Key Features: This massage chair comes with the Sanyo stiffness detector. The stiffness detector uses technology borrowed from lie detectors. The stiffness detector in the SR 1000 can sense tightness in the muscles of the body and other points of stress. The user holds the side of the remote and the chair can detect these areas of stiffness. The chair will then target these areas for relief. The other interesting feature is the shape sensor. The shape sensor takes a measurement of the position of the shoulders. The chair then identifies where the shoulders are at and adjusts the massage accordingly. The rollers width will then become less when it gets to your shoulders and for your neck area. These are some advanced electronic features that are unique to Sanyo. We give a rating of 18 for key features.

Massage Therapy: The SR-1000 comes with automatic and manual massage techniques. The automatic massages are named Recovery and Relax. Relax is a soothing type massage and Recovery is more vigorous for after more strenuous activity. The manual massages come with 3 massage techniques but also have two stretching capabilities. The stretching can be used in combination with the 3 massage techniques. The leg rest is capable to massage both the calves and the feet providing virtually a full body massage capability. The SR1000 earns a 17 for its massage therapy.

The Sanyo SR 1000K scored 87/100 points in our rating scale. The SR-1000 has some very unique electronic features for an entry level massage chair. It has one of the strongest warranty coverage for its price range. The foot massager can be hidden from view which adds to the aesthetics of the chair. The chair comes with a nice wood accents adding to its design flair. The massage therapy is effective. This is certainly a great value for its class. If you are looking for a massage chair recliner in this category the SR-1000K certainly merits your consideration.
