Keep These Good Massage Tips In Mind

Monday, April 6th, 2009

It is crucial that when you are doing massage on somebody that you make it as relaxing an experience for them as you possibly can. It is vital that the massage will help to alleviate the stresses and strains that modern living can sometimes place a person under, and which can often lead to other health issues as well. Below are a number of good massage tips which will help to ensure that the massage you give to someone is not only enjoyable but safe also.

1. You need to use an area for the massage session that the person undergoing the treatment will find easy to relax in. So provide them with an area where they can sit or lie down and that is warm, especially if they need to remove any clothing during the session. If you can then have some kind of sound system in place that allows you play soothing music (if the person wants to listen to it) whilst they are having their massage. Often this is very conducive to helping a person relax even more when having a massage therapy session.

2. It is crucial that once every session with a person has been completed you replace all towels and sheets with new fresh ones. A person is far likely to relax when they know that the person treating them respects them and maintains the equipment they use to a high standard.

3. Although you may think your breath smells okay, do not take any chances. Remember you will be in close proximity to the person you are treating and they will find it somewhat difficult to relax and enjoy the treatment. Even more so if they can actually smell that you have bad breath or it smells of certain foods. Therefore before each session pop in a couple of breath freshners or clean your teeth regularly.

4. Remember you are going to have people visiting you for a massage who are self-conscious about their bodies and may be unwilling to take their clothing off. Therefore, with these people initially it may be wise to use those massage therapy techniques that do not require their clothes to be removed. Only after they become more relaxed and comfortable in your company should you suggest moving on to those types of massage techniques that require clothing to be removed.

5. When you are actually carrying out any form of massage you should start it off using only light pressure on the person’s body. Then as time passes during the massage session you can slowly increase the amount of pressure on the body as the person becomes more relaxed. The more relaxed they are the person will be far more pliable and so the treatment will be that more effective.

6. Another thing you must do is constantly change the part of your hand that you are using. Otherwise you may find that during the massage session certain areas of your hand will tire quickly and so the effectiveness of the technique you are using will be loss.

What is most important of all when carrying out any kind of massage therapy on a person is that you keep the person’s comfort and happiness in mind? By keeping the above good massage tips in mind you should actually be able to ensure that the session is the person undergoes is the most enjoyable and relaxing one they could ever possibly have.

Massage, Experience the Benefits

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Many medical problems and conditions can be helped by having a massage. After a massage you may have a sense of well being, and be totally relaxed, this is why massage is so good for treating stress. Many systems of the body including the muscular, nervous, circulatory and even the immune system are all improved by having a massage.

From the time we are born we crave intimate physical contact with other human beings, this brings us great psychological benefits, and by being in contact with another by way of massage we end up with the feel-good factor from physical contact.

One of the ultimate forms of stress relief is a full body massage. Most people who experience a full body massage cannot stop telling people how amazing they felt afterwards. The first thing that someone usually does after experiencing his or her first full body massage is book another full body massage! A common response from people who’ve experienced a full body massage is that for the first time in their lives they feel they’ve managed to attain total relaxation.

In addition to full body massage, massage can be used on specific, individual parts of the body. One of the main individual body parts that is subject to a specialist form of massage is the foot. Foot massage is generally referred to as reflexology.

Massage therapy has been in the alternative medical field for a ling time, but as scientists proved the efficacy massage as a treatment therapy has gradually over time been accepted into conventional medicine. Some estimations put a figure of 70% of USA hospitals that now use massage as part of their treatment protocols.

Hospitals often now use massage in the treatment of chronic pain symptoms, infant care, joint and muscle mobility and stress management, and the list of disorders that can be treated with massage is growing every year.

Recent research has shown that massage can help lower blood pressure, probably due to reducing stress levels. Certain types of pain can be managed by massage, but to keep the pain under control the massages need to be on a regular basis. research has also shown that massage also helps to boost the immune system.

Massage therapy can be used to aid people who are receiving drug and alcohol withdrawal treatment. Another great benefit of massage therapy is that it can be used in conjunction with other therapies to strengthen their effects – e.g. aromatherapy, reflexology, acupressure and reiki.

By moving into the convential medical field massage therapy is now available to far more people, and as mainstream medicine has endorsed massage as a treatment for a range of conditions more and more research is carried out.

Your First Massage, What To Expect.

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

When you decide to have a massage it can be a little daunting. Don’t worry as most people are a little nervous about having a massage for the first time. No doubt you are asking yourself a lot of questions, the first one might even be “what have I let myself in for?” don’t worry, if the masseur is good it can only be a positive experience. To put your mind at rest I will try to answer some of the questions that might be going through your mind at this time.

The massage therapist will need to know your medical history, what problems you have and even what problems you have had in the past. The therapist will need to know if there is any specific medical condition that has brought you to them or if you just need a relaxing massage. Even if you only want a relaxing massage they will need to know your medical history to make sure that all the techniques they use are suitable for you. If you start to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed you need to tell your massage therapist so that they can rectify the problem if possible.

While questioning you about your health the massage therapist should also explain the procedure he or she will be using. They should ask you about your sensitivity to determine how deep the massage should be. If you are treating a sore area you may find the massage slightly uncomfortable but otherwise you should not feel pain or discomfort during the massage.

Exposing the area of your body that is being treated will help the therapist to work more efficiently, however, it is not mandatory to undress. While it is preferable to drape the areas not requiring exposure with a sheet or towels it is possible for the therapist to work on you while you are fully dressed although this is not ideal. If you do not feel comfortable without clothing be sure to opt for clothing that is not tight or restrictive as it will interfere with the treatment.

The massage therapist should leave the room while you undress, or else there should be a screen for you to undress behind. A large bath towel should be provided so that you should not feel embarrassed being undressed. Your warmth and privacy are of paramount importance.

The massage table will probably be padded and bolsters or rolled towels will be used to get you into a comfortable position for your massage. Sometimes when people are lying on their back they can get backache this can be prevented just by putting a pillow, bolster or rolled towel under their knees. At times the therapist will ask you to move position so that they can reach different areas, if having a full body massage you will spend time on both your back and your front so that all areas can be massaged. Remember unless you tell your therapist that you are cold, uncomfortable or embarrassed they do not know, so do speak up and let them know how you are doing.

Although all therapist work in slightly different ways, they will all want you to have the best experience possible that way you will be back again. Relaxation is a great part of massage so often the lights will be dimmed, sometimes there will only be candle light. Scented candles are often used so if you do not like them or have a problem with a particular scent do tell the therapist. Soft music will often be played, again if you do not like it say so, as what is relaxing music to one person is not to another.

Oil is usually applied to reduce the friction of the massage and you may be asked for your preference of scent. The massage therapist should help you remove the oil before putting your clothes back on so they do not stain.

We are all different and some people chat all the way through the massage for others it is a time of peace and quiet and they do not say two words. The therapist will take your lead and will chat if you want to but will be quite happy not to if that is what you prefer. Of course they may have to ask you to move into a different position at times and they may ask how you are doing but the rest is up to you.

A good massage therapist should make you feel comfortable enough to ask any questions you have about the procedure and respect your privacy and level of comfort while treating you. Ask for recommendations and meet with the therapist to discuss their methods before booking your appointment.

Some Benefits Of Massage

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Should you pay for a massage, or are you just wasting your money. Some people may say why pay just to have your back rubbed. But if your masseur is well trained, then there are hugh benefits to be had by having a massage. Unless you have a sports injury it doesn’t matter what type of massage you have as the benefits are very similar with all of them.

Well, what are these benefits? and is a massage worth the money? Although massage therapy was used for thousands of years by the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and Chinese as part of their healing tradition, in the Western world it is fairly new. This therapy has only been used for a couple of hundred years in Europe, and for the majority of that time was only available to wealthy people.

In traditional healing, medicines would have been given, as well as advise on diet and exercise, and often massage with oils was also reccommended. Sometimes massage was given as a stand alone therapy and a variety of oils would have been prescribed.

Although the west accepted the traditional methods of massage, over the last century massage in the west has evolved into a blend of traditional and modern techniques. Massage has been incorporated into main stream medicine as the scientists have proved that there are real benefits to having a massage.

If asked the majority of people would tell you that massage is used to relax you, but I have to say that it does far more than that. Although saying that the benefits are similar for every type of massage, each method does bring their own unique technique to create healing in the body.

It is important to get used to listening to your body, we are all individuals and are changing all of the time. Maybe you have tried massage and thought that it was ok but didn’t find any real benefit, then maybe it was the wrong type of massage for you at the moment.

One of the primary benefits of massage is relaxation, which can be very difficult to achieve, that is unless you happen to be into meditation. You live in a very stressful world and you were never designed to live your life as you do, rushing around and never finding time to relax. Yes of course your ancestors had stressful lives, but their stress came in short bursts, not continuous all day every day like yours is.

Today’s stressful world causes you a great deal of harm, there is a hectic pace of life, where you may feel you must be doing something all the time, this takes a toll on you both mentally and physically. You may often feel exhausted, but feel you have to carry on for fear of loosing your job to someone else.

Environmental pollution in the air, and chemicals in your food puts toxins into your body, putting even greater strain on your body. Fortunately, a good massage works to help the body get rid of toxins and allows the body to relax, taking tension out of the tight muscles.

On the physical level a good massage will leave you feeling invigorated, when you have finished your massage you may feel as if you are walking on air.

When there is a build of of toxins in the body the excess is placed into cells to stop the toxins from harming the body. Problems arise when the cells themselves cannot function properly due to an overload of toxins, health problems then start to develop. When you have a massage there is an increase in your blood and lymphatic circulation, this in turn helps the body to excrete any toxins so the cells do not get to the point of overload.

When you have a massage there is a lot of physical manipulation of the muscles, this can reduce stiffness, release tension and increase mobility. Due to the nature of this physical manipulation, massage is very good as part of your regular exercise regimine, as it can help in the prevention of muscle injury.

Many scientific studies confirm that massage therapy can:

Reduce heart rate.

Lower blood pressure (if high).

Increase blood circulation and lymphatic flow.

Stiffened and tense muscles are relaxed, and weak and inactive muscles due to lack of movement when you have an illness or an injury are stimulated.

Endorphins are increased.

There is a reduction in anxiety and tension.

This list is very impressive, but I am sure over the next few years the scientists will find even more benefits of massage.

The type of treatment offered by skilled masseurs combines healing techniques which work with the natural healing powers of your body to bring about wholeness to your mind, body and spirit.

Of course, it is recommended that anyone with any severe condition or chronic pain should consult with a licensed medical professional before embarking on a massage. Also any well trained massage therapist will be able to tell you if it is wise for you to have a massage or not.

Review of the Sanyo HEC-SR1000K Massage Chair Recliner

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Sanyo has a full range of massage chairs in their product line. We are going to take an in depth view of the entry level model for Sanyo. The model SR 1000K is the subject of this product review. Our reviews are systematic and we judge any massage chair is five critical areas. We give a point rating of up to twenty points per area for a total possible score of 100. This is the SR-1000K massage chair recliner by Sanyo.

Warranty Coverage & Customer Service: We start with the warranty coverage because this is your long term protection. Massage chairs are complex machines and obtaining sufficient warranty coverage is always advised. Sanyo covers the SR-1000K recliner with the following warranty: You get 3 years coverage for the roller mechanism, 1 year labor coverage, 1 year parts coverage and 1 year in home service coverage. This is a great warranty for an entry level massage chair. Sanyo also has moved to a national call center which has also improved customer service. We rate the warranty coverage and customer service a 19.

Comfort & Ergonomics: Quite simply, a massage chair needs to be comfortable to sit in. We have seen some chairs that could not be used other than when the massage is running. Sanyo has figured this out and the SR1000 is a comfortable chair. The controller is well laid out and easy to figure out. The main power is to the side which takes a short training period to remember. The foot massager takes getting use to flipping out which is somewhat cumbersome. We give this chair a 17 for comfort and ergonomics.

Ease of Use: This is perhaps a category because it is a pet peeve of ours. Let’s face it our world is getting more complex and so are the devices in it. It is the responsibility of the maker of these items to keep it simple. We found the remote to have too many steps to get what you want compared to other massage chairs. This was surprising given that it was a Sanyo. But nevertheless, it is what it is. We rate the SR-1000 a 16 for ease of use.

Key Features: This massage chair comes with the Sanyo stiffness detector. The stiffness detector uses technology borrowed from lie detectors. The stiffness detector in the SR 1000 can sense tightness in the muscles of the body and other points of stress. The user holds the side of the remote and the chair can detect these areas of stiffness. The chair will then target these areas for relief. The other interesting feature is the shape sensor. The shape sensor takes a measurement of the position of the shoulders. The chair then identifies where the shoulders are at and adjusts the massage accordingly. The rollers width will then become less when it gets to your shoulders and for your neck area. These are some advanced electronic features that are unique to Sanyo. We give a rating of 18 for key features.

Massage Therapy: The SR-1000 comes with automatic and manual massage techniques. The automatic massages are named Recovery and Relax. Relax is a soothing type massage and Recovery is more vigorous for after more strenuous activity. The manual massages come with 3 massage techniques but also have two stretching capabilities. The stretching can be used in combination with the 3 massage techniques. The leg rest is capable to massage both the calves and the feet providing virtually a full body massage capability. The SR1000 earns a 17 for its massage therapy.

The Sanyo SR 1000K scored 87/100 points in our rating scale. The SR-1000 has some very unique electronic features for an entry level massage chair. It has one of the strongest warranty coverage for its price range. The foot massager can be hidden from view which adds to the aesthetics of the chair. The chair comes with a nice wood accents adding to its design flair. The massage therapy is effective. This is certainly a great value for its class. If you are looking for a massage chair recliner in this category the SR-1000K certainly merits your consideration.

Oldest Healing Therapy, Massage

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Many ancient civilizations used massage as part of their health procedures, and in the Middle and Far East massage therapy has been in use since 3000BC, and possibly even longer. The origins of massage therapy are unknown, but it has been around a very long time and is possibly the oldest therapy known to man.

The ‘Father of Medicine’, Hippocrates, used to reccommend an oiled massage every day for his patients.

To allow the hands to move over the body with ease masseurs will use oils no matter which form of massage they use, essential oils are sometimes used after being mixed with a carrier oil.

Essential oils can penetrate the skin, maybe through either the sweat pores or the hair follicles. By being absorbed through the skin these essential oils end up in the tissues and blood stream, so care must be taken.

Although used for centuries in the Middle and Far East, massage therapy did not reach the West for thousands of years. In the 19th century it became increasingly popular especially in Europe, but was limited to the health spas that were patronised only by wealthy people.

Swedish massage was develped by Per Henrik Ling a Swedish gymnast. Massage had become very popular, and he developed this type of massage due to his interest in sport. This type of massage deals mainly with the joints and muscles of the body.

It was not until well into the 20th century that massage became really popular with the ordinary people of the Western world. An American called George Downing published a book in the early 1970s simply called The Massage Book. This wasn’t just a book on massage, but a book that showed massage therapy in a way that took into account a persons whole body.

By taking into account mind, body and spirit massage had come the whole circle back to Hippocrates who always spoke in terms of mind body and spirit. This is what we now term as the holistic approach to healing.

One very good way to rid the body of accumulated waste and toxins is to have a deep massage, this gets the blood and lymphatic circulation working really well. As well as working on the physical level, massage also works on the mind and spirit by relaxing the physical body, the mind and spirit can also be relaxed.

Massage has a hugh benefit on the body, as endorphins are released during the massage creating the feel good factor, the persons spirit is lifted and they feel wonderful. As massage relaxes the muscles and releases tension from the body, the person is able to relax and let go of all the stresses of everyday life.

In traditional Chinese and Indian medicine it is believed that energy flows through the body along meridian lines. It is also thought that certain factors can block these meridian pathways and in the process cause illness. The restriction of energy by stress can be resolved by having a massage.

Massage therapy was on the fringes of conventional medicine for a long time, but now modern medical experts generally accepts the efficacy and benefits of massage. In fact, more than 70% of American hospitals now offer massage therapy as a part of their treatments.

Massage therapy has a wide usage in hospitals, and is used mainly in the treatment of chronic pain, pregnancy, stress relief, and for joint and muscle mobility.

Some research has shown that massage therapy does indeed have positive effects on the physical body and can lower high blood pressure, help to relieve pain and very importantly boost the immune system.

This very versatile form of treatment is now available to far more of the general public. By incorporating massage into main stream medicine Dr’s in hospitals are now able to treat high blood pressure, joint and muscle problems and stress with massage as part of the treatment programme. As time goes by more and more people with a variety of different conditions are found to benefit from massage.

Hawaiian Massage Chair Therapy Provides Daily Back Pain Relief

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Did you know that 4 out of 5 people will suffer from back pain? That is 80% of the population. Our backs take a beating and pain and discomfort is the result. Of the 4 people only half will actually seek treatment. The other half will live with the discomfort. If that half only knew that Hawaiian massage therapy is a great way to get relief, they might be more tempted to actually get help.

Hawaiian massage has evolved from the ancient healers of the Hawaiian islands. These master healers developed specific massage methodologies through time to relief problems throughout the body. One particular method is the Lomi Lomi massage. This Hawaiian technique uses the hands to work gently, yet firmly over the entire body. This therapy is particularly effective in relieving back pain, since it penetrates deeper and deeper.

These ancient practitioners saw the total energy flow through the body. They say that energy flow was sometimes hindered in certain regions, yet flowed in others. In time a holistic approach to healing and well being was developed. But specifically what they found was areas of energy blockage could be manipulated. With the development of different massage techniques, the energy flow of the body could be restored. This restoration brought back balance to the body.

The Lomi Lomi massage uses gentle swaying motions, just like the wave lapping up on the beach. These gentle swaying motions loosen tight muscles. They also help to stretch and elongate the muscles. This restores elasticity back to the muscles. Hawaiian style therapy makes use of deep tissue techniques to penetrate deeply. Gentle pressure is initiated in the beginning and gradually more firm pressure is used. These helps to provde deep relief to aching muscles.

Hawaiian massage techniques are now being integrated into the best massage chair brands like Panasonic and Omega. Panasonic has developed software programs that replicate the key techniques of Hawaiian massage. You can find one-touch massage buttons just for this specialized therapy technique. Other companies like Omega have integrated some of the more effective movements like the gentle swaying motion. Omega also includes stretching or lower body traction in its recliners to help the stretching and loosening of tight muscles for great relief.

You may be surprised how far massage recliners have advanced. They provide full body therapy and an astonishing array of massage techniques. The Lomi Lomi massage is the one of the latest to be integrated into these tireless mechanical masseuses. If you have back pain, check with your health care professional about a massage chair. They offer tremendous capability and with the addition of Hawaiian massage can take to higher states of relaxation and tranquility.
